Women of Tejano: Elida Reyna The Ever Evolving Tejano Icon


Women of Tejano: Spotify playlist showcases the women of the past and present making an impact on Tejano music; as well as the future NEW TALENT of mujeres in the industry. This month's cover artist is legacy act, Elida Reyna of Elida Reyna y Avante


The two-time Latin Grammy winning artist who in the 30 years of her career has evolved her sound alongside the changes of the music industry, is living proof that Tejano NEVER died.


Reyna began her career in 1991 with album "Sola", this would be one of a handful of times Elida Reyna would present on a record as a 'solo artist'. The album was released under Mestizo Records. But it wouldn't be until March of 1994, with the album "Atrevete" released under Voltage Discos that she would see her first hit. This album included the iconic hit "Luna Llena", which became a (RIAA) GOLD record with over 50,000 units sold.  If you attempt to look for the album now on streaming you will find yourself hard-pressed to find it, as it was repackaged and rereleased in 2005 as the album titled 'Luna Llena'. The aforementioned record in its chronological order is only available in CD format.


Voltage Discos, was a record label run by the Tejano Super group 'La Mafia', and Elida Reyna in a suprise move would leave the label and head over to Tejas Records. Tejas Records would be her musical home for the next 7 albums in her discography, until the 2008 move to Freddie Records. In her second record "Fantasia" with Freddie Records, Elida Reyna would not only get another RIAA GOLD certification of sales for the record, but it would lead to her WINNING her FIRST LATIN GRAMMY.

In the last 30 years, of her career Reyna has snapped up a whopping 34 Tejano Music Awards, the most by any female artist in the industry to date. Elida Reyna's recent EP release "Herencia de una Reyna" is the continued cementing of her legacy within the industry.
